History
Founded in 1929, Henri's Bakery began at the corner of 10th and Peachtree Streets when Henri Fiscus, a French-born baker with French and German heritage, purchased a small French bakery in Midtown Atlanta. After immigrating to the United States in 1921 following World War I, Henri worked in restaurants in New York and Rhode Island before becoming the opening pastry chef at Atlanta's iconic Biltmore Hotel. Six years later, his passion for exceptional baked goods and warm hospitality inspired him to open what would become Henri's Bakery & Café.
Henri quickly earned a reputation for his innovative recipes, unwavering quality, and genuine dedication to his customers. As the business grew, Henri's became a beloved Atlanta institution, relocating over the years to Rhodes Center, Peachtree Palisades, the corner of Peachtree and Piedmont Roads, and finally to its longtime Buckhead home on Irby Avenue in 1969.
Henri passed away in 1974, just one day before his 80th birthday. His grandchildren proudly continued his legacy, preserving his original recipes and commitment to excellence. Their dedication helped Henri's earn international recognition when W Magazine named it one of the 10 Best Bakeries in the World in 1976. The family continued expanding the business with the opening of a second location in Sandy Springs in 1984.
